T3 S3: Society interaction and involvement to solve water management problems
23.11.2023 11:15 – 12:45
Main Auditory
The water issue is an integrative part of a chain of responsibility that links science, politics and society. Unfortunately, this chain of responsibility still has too many gaps (mostly at the political level), which hinder a real implementation of the goals in reality. Water security requires incorporating water sector development priorities into national strategies worldwide to adapt to climate change. Science and policy makers need to work closely with civil society to adapt and implement measures which effectively solve the majority of water and climate-related problems.
In many countries, in addition to economic and technical problems, there are also cultural and social obstacles that hinder successful project implementation. The position of women in many societies is particularly striking. Although they are largely responsible for procuring water for the households, especially in rural areas without a stationary water supply, the proportion of women in senior management positions is very low. In addition, there is often the socio-economic aspect that poorer sections of the population are more affected by water scarcity than sections that are more privileged. This session aims to find answers on how to close this gap between research, technical feasibility and actual implementation.
